Drop item, and from what I can tell you cant equip it, but it has mod of resist fear 01. Does it work just by carrying it, or is it taking up space and I should just sell it..?
Any info appreciated!

There are many items, like the small spook skull, with magic effects. The only way to get the effect is by equipping it in your shield slot meaning you are holding it in your non-weapon hand.

Of course this is only possible when using one-handed weapons, and losing the use of the shield is a steep tradeoff. In some cases though, its worth it. I've reduced the equip time of a lot of items, including shields, so swapping a light/small shield for a spook skull might only take a couple turns, and the resist fear is a huge benefit when fighting (for example) spooks since each point knocks a turn off the duration of every fear effect, including turning 1 turn of fear into "no effect".

I've also been reducing the cost formula of such "held" items (which includes some gems with magic effects, fyi), discounting them far below what I like to call their "ring value." For instance, if a ring of resist fear 1 has a base value of 520, a small spook skull with the same effect has a value of barely half that at 261 (and, for instance, a full helm of bravery, also with the same effect, is valued at 2545). This means that the items you'll find with the most valuable effects at a given level will tend to be such "held" items (once I add enough of them that they become commonplace, that is).

Its also quite possible that some day I'll create a way to somehow integrate these "special" items and gems into other equippable items .. but thats nothing I'm working on or even planning for the forseeable future, though I like the concept.

Now, to finally answer your question! Generally yes you should probably just sell it, since with durability 10 its only a matter of time until a fireball or the like destroys it. But if you're a character that could really benefit from some fear protection, and you're a player who actually takes the time to swap gear for certain encounters, then its a cheap way to get a very helpful effect.

Awesome, thank you!!

Makes sense, and even if the equip time is reduced only a little on some of the items, makes sense to hang on to loot like the skull, with encounter specific benefits. I had thought about asking if any of the "basic" items, i.e. rings, bracelets etc, would be "craftable" at some future date, or posting it as a suggestion, but it seemed pretty obvious how cool that would be at a future date ;-)

I realy should have thought of equipping without a shield and a one handed weapon 8-S
