1/17/2010 10:08:24 AM | Anyone have very many wizards make it past lvl 1? I have been trying- using tanks and clerics and heal potions- it seems like I get close to leveling and then get mashed with a single hit.
Getting a bit frustrating- i understand the high mortality rate- but this is getting a bit ridiculous :p |
Legion 1/17/2010 12:45:13 PM | As you've probably seen, I just added a staging area before each adventure. This is very useful for pretty much everyone. For example high level groups with lots of spellcasters usually have quite a few rounds of preperatory casting to do, and trying to get all the preliminaries done while getting ambushed by dozens of demons is never easy.
But I think it will also have a surpringly large impact on first level wizard survival rates. A lot of first level wizard deaths come in ambushes when your adventure screen just loads up with your wizard dead. If you have time to queue up your fireball or lightning bolt before risking an ambush, or set your tanks even, it should really help.
Its possible attack spells will still be best. A queued fireball tends to do well in level zeros ... and if you have two or more wizards with fireballs going off on the first round, not much survives.
But you might want to look at other choices now. Choose air, and you could always cast a shield spell in the staging area for extra defense. On a high dex caster this can make a huge difference because when you start pushing your defense up toward 20 not much is going to have more than a 5% of hitting.
Or a toughness spell if you choose body magic.
This would probably be better on higher HP spellcasters where it might take two hits to kill them. Level 2 (or 4) toughness (most defensive spells are 2x strength when cast on yourself) will usually reduce each incoming blow a point or two.
For some characters you might want to pick communication; you could (depending on spell points) have up to an alarm 3 (15 SP) cast. This would start every encounter at +3 range (alarm is +1 range per level). Thus you should almost always have time to run if you choose to.
In fact ... with this change, communication magic may become the skill of choice for first level wizards and mystics. Its a new change and not a huge one, but I bet if you experiment with it I bet this staging area might help a few more wizards make it. And even one or two more successes will seem like a big deal since so few make it. |

thanks! |
1/18/2010 9:28:21 AM | Thanks for the advice, I see how much the body and air spells are going to be much more effective- at least they (perceptually) are more my choices now than direct damage spells. Using the staging area I have goten a monk to lvl 2- already a quicksilver kid :)
I also have seen how big of a difference that taking time to have tanks combined with healers and body castors realy does improve survivability.
Thanks again Legion :) |
