more then once I have ended turns and characters split or move off on there own without me wanting them to separate or move. is this a feature? I know about the penalities for larger groups fighting in confined spaces but I would much rather accept this then have weak characters wander away right into enemy..

Yes, a feature. Monsters will do this too. If a square is overloaded and assigned to melee attacks people will try move to more advantageous squares. These "reaction moves" are entirely free. They do not count as an action and you will still attack when you make reaction moves (as will monsters). If you absolutely need them to stay in-square put them on any non-melee action such as defend, or equip, or casting, or drinking, or give them a missile weapon, or target a group opposite the undesirable direction, or back them up manually, or don't allow your groups to get overloaded before engaging. Managing combat reaction moves is surely a big part of the game now for large party adventures.

Another point to consider is that almost any combat skill will reduce "combat space" required. As your guys gain in power and skill you'll not that the space needed drops pretty steadily. At high level you'll be able to get more guys into your fighting groups before they are overloaded.

In the old system low level groups were often constrained to 2 or 3 guys. These hard caps are gone, but often effectively remain through reaction moves. You'll find the "battle formations" skill really drops the combat space quickly. Shorter range weapons, as well as shorter and/or slower moving characters (such as dwarves) need a lot less space too. There is certainly more to think about now when setting up characters and groups.

You'll note some skills have a greater effect than others. For instance, training natural weaponry (i.e. unarmed combat) really teaches people how to fight in tighter quarters well -- that skill will drop space needed faster than other weapons. Note that these discounts (for almost any combat related skills) aren't dependent on using a specific weapon either. Knowing how to fight with many weapons and styles will help you during large group battles even when using your polearm or whatever.

Understood, but I guess there is nothing to do when enemy is right next to appearance spot and crowd next couple zones as well. Have had this and tried moving people but characters I desperately wanted to stay safe ran not 1 but 2 zones into enemy. I think I did have at least one always on evade and defend.
