Sometimes groups of spellcasting monsters can really be problematic. For example, a group of 19 stygian demons all throwing d20-d50 lightning bolts at the party, or 13 large red demons blanketing your groups with d10 fireballs. There are obviously all sorts of tricks to handling these, but let me mention two that I've started relying on lately.

One is summoning or charming large groups of "junk" monster. Basically you're looking for the most HP you can get for the least SP. For instance, 10 wolves might be worthless in a high level adventure, but its still 100 hp or so total, and being split across 10 different targets, you can really take the sting out of the first few rounds of heavy magic bombardment. Even one round wasted on a group of minions is a lot of d10s, d20s, or d50s that aren't hitting your characters.

The second idea is most useful when you have a lot of range to work with. Maximize the relevant resistances on a single character and send him out solo to soak up all the damage before the monsters can get close enough to engage him physically. For instance, give one of your guys a fire resistance ring, cloak, whatever you can get for him, then cast resist fire (preferably the caster is the one loading up, since the spell effects are doubled), you can even drink a resist potion if you have any, and he'll be practically immune to fire damage. Step out and let the red remons fire away. Before they get into range, or after they run out of spells, reform with your group and fight them. I like to use a shaman for this, who has healing magic to keep himself topped off on HP, and decent HP to begin with for a spellcaster to limit the risk.

Obviously there are many other solutions too. Group silence spells are easy outs, and if you can manage to have the monsters step into a multiple-group ambush they often won't live long enough to use all their magic anyway. Be creative -- every group has different assets to handle different situations in their own unique ways.
