Here is a nice bit of information: the recommended level is calculated as the lowest level adventure that, if completed, will average at least 3x party cost in loot values.
Running two levels under recommended will definately show a small profit over the long run, if you complete every adventure and don't spend much on equipment. Because of the variance involved, it might take a quite a few adventures to see this profit materialize, when you finally run into large groups of hobgoblin warriors or whatever it is at each level that can really give a big cash infusion.
Running three levels below recommended is much more dicey. Technically, over a long enough sample you'll come out ahead, but this assumes you're completing every adventure, killing every lair, and spending essentially nothing. Three levels under recommended is a very tough path to follow with much success.
Four levels below will show a clear and steady loss.
If you want to be able to spend, say, 50-100% of your base party cost on equipment each adventure, you need to be running adventures no lower than one below recommended. Again, we're assuming you complete everything, or almost everything.
Personally, with the exception of level 1 characters, I will never run an adventure below the recommended level except in extremely rare cases when because of alignments and charismas I can't put together a group of 5+ characters, in which case if they are weaker characters, I'll allow them to run one below. Although recently I've taken to having them run recommended levels anyway, figuring if they are that bad, I'll be better off if some of them die off. This allows me a lot of flexibility to replace and upgrade equipment while still piling up excess cash, and most importantly I never mind fleeing from difficult encounters because the money isn't very important.
Some players routinely run adventures above the recommended level and do extremely well. They end up with only the best characters, and they never feel any pressure to complete adventures since even a few encounters at higher levels can, if you're lucky, make you rich.
Anyway ... to summarize, to get much beyond level 5 characters, you are going to find that you need to run adventures closer to the recommended levels. If this means some of your weaker characters perish, that is the price that must be paid to get the others to the highest levels.
Oh, another thought. Make sure your personal goals are such that you'll feel good acheiving them. For example no one has ever had a level 10 character; if your goal is to get a character to level 10 under the current rules, you are going to be disappointed, unless you are just a lot better (and luckier) than all the other players. Personally I have never gotten a character past level 6. I certainly plan to, but I know that the further you get in Mythic Warfare, the more difficult it becomes. At some point everyone starts running up against the cieling of what they can achieve. Most people do not have 5th level parties, so the fact that you're having a hard time there should not be a surprise ... exceeding that point will be a real challenge. Good luck! |
