You may not have given much thought to party leaders and party size, but you should. Larger groups can go on higher level adventures with less risk, and thus collect more treasure more quickly.

When a group of adventurers are gathered (set to ready) they will, on their own, select a party leader. This individual will be the character with the highest (level+charisma) with ties broken by total XP and then intelligence.

The size of the party depends on how much party space capacity the leader has and how much space each member takes up.

A leader has a base capacity equal to five times his level plus twice his charisma. He will receive a 10% bonus if he is of any lawful alignment, since his natural tendency toward order and rules help him maintain cohesion in larger groups. Likewise a leader of any chaotic alignment will suffer a 10% penalty due to his inherent lack of concern for law and order. Finally, an extra capacity of +10 per skill level is added if the party leader has the leadership skill.

The amount of space taken by each party member is a base 10 for most races, modified primarily by charisma. High charisma individuals are much easier to deal with and accordingly take up much less party space. Those with low charisma tend to be hard to get along with and require more attention from the leader, so they take up more party space. For similar reasons, if a character's alignment matches the party leader he will take up less space, while opposing alignments cause friction and take more space. If the powerful and charismatic leader is of the opposite sex, a character will make more of an effort to get along and space is further reduced one point. Members of the same race as the leader also take up less space. Other modifiers may be added in the future, and all are listed when you click the oversized party link if your selected group is too large to be able to adventure as a party.

There are several important things to note. First and most obvious is that higher level characters will lead larger groups so that as your clan grows in power so too will your ability to field massive adventuring parties.

Secondly, high-charisma characters are very valuable! You will find that your low-charisma characters have a hard time fitting into your groups. Consequently they are either risking death in smaller parties or, more likely, are requiring more time and attention to earn the money they need because the smaller party sizes mean that they go on less rewarding lower-level adventures.

Finally, an interesting consequence of leader selection. You may have noted that the party leader is not necessarily the character that can lead the largest group. You may have a lawful character with a high leadership score that can control large parties with ease. However, if you pair him with a more powerful and/or charismatic character you will find that the group chooses the latter as party leader even though he is less capable of handling a large party. To best understand this, remember that adventures are tense and stressful situations. When their lives are on the line, adventurers will tend to follow the lead of the most powerful and charismatic person around regardless of whether or not he is formally trained or has the well-disciplined mentality of a lawful alignment.

Careful thought and planning will allow you to create enormous parties of well-led compatible characters who can tackle the most rewarding high-level adventures with ease.
